CIWM (WAMITAB) Qualification Information

Why do I need a CIWM(WAMITAB) qualification?

Since December 2008, any waste site that requires an environmental permit in England and Wales must demonstrate they have someone technically competent to meet the conditions of their permit, this is called the Technical Competence Manager (TCM).

WAMITAB is the organisation that awards the Technical Competence certification through its Operator Competence Scheme, but there are different types of qualification depending on the waste types your site will process and their risk to the environment.

The bottom line is that without a Technically Competent Manager, the site will not be allowed to operate. (If you don’t have anyone able to cover this role at the moment then we can provide an interim solution, whilst someone from your organisation is getting qualified. Just click here to find out how we can help.)

How long does the CIWM(WAMITAB) qualification take?

This depends on the particular qualification and the person going through the training, but on average you can expect to get qualified in six to twelve months.

How much does it cost?

Again, the cost will vary depending on the qualification type, how much support you need to complete the modules and the distance the assessor needs to travel to your site. However, as a ballpark figure, on average the qualification will cost you around £2,500 - £3,000.

Next Steps...

We’re here to help you get your certificate and this animation will guide you through the process and what you need to do at each step.

Step 1: Give us a Call

We need to know what type of waste you deal with, so we get the right qualification identified for you. We also want to know if you have any other relevant qualifications, (which might mean you can skip some units).

Step 2: Review the Quote & Confirm You Want to Go Ahead

Once we know which qualification you need, we will email you a quote to review. If you want to go ahead, just give us a call or drop us an email and we will then send you the registration documents to complete.

Step 3: Registration with CIWM(WAMITAB)

When we get your completed registration paperwork, we register you with WAMITAB and they confirm your registration to us.

Step 4: Your Pre-Assessment Questionnaire & Portfolio

As soon as we have confirmation from WAMITAB, we will prepare your portfolio file, pre-assessment questionnaire and an evidence requirement list and get these to you. They will help you start gathering the paperwork you need to complete your portfolio. (If there is a piece of evidence that you don’t think you have or can get, call us or your assessor so we can help you work on that document before you start the assessment process.)

Step 5: Your Assessment Visits

Your allocated assessor will contact you directly to arrange the first appointment, at which they will talk you through your portfolio and the modules you’ll need to complete to gain your award. It is their job to assess your knowledge, ability and skills relevant to your waste site and the qualification and they will ask you to demonstrate this, either through written work, videos and/or voice recordings or a mixture of both.

Step 6: Completing Your Portfolio

The number of assessment visits and the length of time it will take you to complete your portfolio will depend on how much evidence you already have and how much time you can spend working on your qualification. You may only require 2 or 3 visits from your assessor (working on 2 or 3 units at a time) or you might need more time on each unit. Regardless of how long it takes, we’ll be there to support you by phone or email if there is something you are not sure about.

Step 7: Portfolio Review

Once you and your assessor are happy with your portfolio, it will be submitted for an internal quality assurance check. If the IQA picks up something that they think is missing or not completed fully, they may ask for more details (but this doesn’t happen very often).

Step 8: Your Certificate

As soon as we receive sign off from the IQA, we will process your qualification claim and send your WAMITAB certificate to you, so you can hang it on your site office wall!
